BIOGRAPHY
Virginia McGill was born and raised in Sydney. From Stanmore Public School, she went to Fort Street Girls’ High, then to Sydney University and much later to University of NSW where she was awarded a PhD in Music. She has been a music tutor at WEA Sydney for many years.
Her interest in art began when she visited an exhibition of Van Gogh’s works at the Tate, London, in the late sixties. In the seventies, she discovered the John Ogburn Studio and remained a student of John until his death in 2010. To him, she owes a debt of gratitude for his stimulating and challenging teaching. His approach to art not only helped in the act of painting but also in the appreciation of original works which Virginia has been fortunate enough to see in galleries overseas.
A one-time director of the Harrington Artists’ Co-operative Gallery, she has been a regular exhibitor at the gallery.
“I find painting more demanding than ever. It is an unforgiving mirror of my mediocrity and thus the struggle.”
