BIOGRAPHY

Helen was born in Camperdown in 1943 and lived as a child in Guyra and Bowral. She became interested in painting through encouragement from her grandmother Minnie Gates. She moved back to Sydney, and now lives again in Camperdown. She has a son and two daughters.

In 1964, Helen completed Fine Arts at the National Art School Sydney, which at the time directed all students towards academism. This almost destroyed her enthusiasm for painting. However one teacher, Lyndon Dadswell, inspired her through sculpture classes, so she looked beyond NAS for a teacher of painting. A few years later she was introduced to the John Ogburn Studio, where she is still a student.

Helen taught Visual Arts in state high schools from 1972 to 2006.

She has been a student at the John Ogburn Studio for many years, because John’s unique teaching approach has enabled her to endure the hard road of remaining true to the meaning of art.

Helen has been exhibiting at the Harrington Street Gallery for 32 years.
